BUDAPEST METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
The Budapest Metropolitan University (METU) has provided art courses since 2010, and is by now the largest higher education institution in the country, both in terms of the number of full-time students and the number of programmes. The Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries offers 19 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate courses for young artists taught in Hungarian and English by the country’s most renowned art professionals. The OBJECT CALLIGRAPHY exhibition is a selection of works by current and previous students of METU.
PLANAR IMPRESSION OF THE MOVEMENT
Calligraphy is the art of hand-drawn composition of scripts and lettering. With a practised sequence of hand movements written images are created, which are planar imprints of our consciousness and movements. Even with persistent practice, we are not able to do calligraphy exactly the same every time; there are as many types of writing as personalities. In calligraphy, personality leaves a sensitive mark. It is that which makes a two-dimensional composition unique.
SPACIAL IMPRESSION OF THE MOVEMENT
The process of creating handmade objects is exactly the same. The only difference is that one-handed planar tracing is replaced by two-handed three-dimensional creation. By practising sequences of movements, we create an object that is a three-dimensional imprint of our consciousness and our movements on the material. The choreography of our repeated movements may seem identical, but they can never be exactly the same. There are as many ways of processing the material as personalities. The objects carry a sensitive imprint of personality. The handmade, three-dimensional objects are made unique by our personality.Birth of a new object In addition to unique and unrepeatable creations, object calligraphy also holds the potential for the birth of new ideas. As soon as movement sequences of processing the material become automatic, the artist no longer needs to concentrate on his movements. The liberated, almost meditative state of consciousness allows free space for the formulation of new ideas, for designing the object. The creators of the prototypes on display have all followed the same mental-physical path. The beauty of the exhibited works lies not only in their uniqueness and their unrepeatability. Each one of them is the result of months of planning, practice, experimentation, and persistent physical work.
