”MOTTAINAI” INTERSECTIONS

“I have learnt the mentality of mottainai, meaning ‘don’t waste’, from my parents. I cut out circular shapes from leather waste, as if I was cutting out pastry. A hold one piece in one hand, and at the same time I loop another one through it. Holding the pieces looped, I loop a third one through them, and so on … I can make an infinitely extended surface in space. Not only can we extend the surface limitlessly, but the pattern of loops involves numerous variations.  I do not need any tool at all, not even glue to join the shapes.’
